Women have, for years, been neglected in the economically weaker sections of society and have had to depend on menfolk and their family for their existence. Be it education, or self-development, they have constantly been ignored so that their male siblings could benefit from such opportunities.
To such women, Self Help Groups have come as a blessing in disguise. Such Groups not only inculcate a sense of awareness in them about the economy and society around them, but also help hone their skills so that they can earn their living and become independent. From the basics of business to save their hard-earned money, these women are guided along the road to self improvement.
The Milk Sweet Scheme
One such programme is the milk peda scheme that has been successfully conducted by AIM for Seva at Anaikatti, under the Mahalir Thittam. Through this initiative, over 200 women have gained employment by starting a unit for making ‘peda’ (sweet made from milk). These sweets are distributed in all Aavin Dairy outlets throughout Coimbatore city. The peda making in turn has created a demand for cow’s milk and hence women from other SHGs have started raising cows to supply milk to the ‘peda’ making unit creating a backward linkage. So every step of the project, from rearing cows, to milking them, supplying the milk, the peda production process, packaging and the final marketing, is handled by the women from the self help groups. At the end of the day, each woman involved takes home an average income of Rs.200/- per day.
Garnering Support from Various Quarters
The programme has been approved by the Tamilnadu Women’s Development Corporation and has been successfully implemented in five panchayats in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. The venture has been made possible by the coming together of three SHGs, with the support of the Milk Peda Producers’ Federation. The programme is also aided by the Tamilnadu Women Development Corporation and is facilitated by AIM for Seva. Aavin Society, Coimbatore, a unit of Dairy Development Department, Govt., of Tamilnadu, assists in the marketing of the products.
Brick Manufacture
Another area where women have been reaching self sufficiency is brick production. Six SHGs have entered the business of brick manufacture and are actively involved in the running of the wet brick preparation process unit.
