Disaster Relief

At times of crisis, a helping hand can make a huge difference in bringing life back to normalcy for those affected. The recent occurrences of the earthquake in Gujarat and the tsunami in the coastal towns of southern India were instances when AIM for Seva rose to the occasion.

It was the organization’s work during times of normalcy that gave it the impetus to quickly respond to these calamities. In an attempt to put the victims of Tsunami back on their feet in as short a time as possible, AIM for Seva employed a two-pronged effort. While it undertook short-term relief measures, it also initiated long-term rehabilitation work.

Food, temporary shelter, boats, fishing nets and engines were donated to the fishing communities affected by the killer waves. The long term rehabilitation work comprised providing the foundations for community-building. From the debris left behind by the giant tidal waves would arise a new face of society. And this would not have been possible but for generous help and support from corporates and foreign institutions.

Rehabilitation work was undertaken primarily in three tsunami-affected areas – Nagapattinam, Kadalur village (35 km south of Chennai) and Pulicat Lake Area (North Chennai).
