SSLC and Plus Two Examinations
Several children living in the AIM for Seva Chatralayas are appearing for the class X and XII public exams this year (2007 – 08). This is an exam conducted by the Directorate of Public Examinations of the Central or State Government.
This year there are about 60 children appearing for the class X and about 15 children for the class XII exams.
Many students appearing for these common exams are from the AIM for Seva Chatralayas in Srinagar and Karnaprayag – Uttarakhand, Annaikatti and Pillur Dam – Tamil Nadu, Hoshangabad – Madhya Pradesh and Alwal – Andhra Pradesh. Some of the students hope to become teachers, engineers, doctors, government officials etc. With Pujya Swamiji’s blessings, AIM for Seva takes this opportunity to wish the students good luck to pass out with flying colours.
Action at Anaikatti
Easy loan for all
A "Loan Mela" was organized in association with the Indian Overseas Bank - Chinna Thadagam branch, in the presence of Pujya Swamiji. In this mela, 26 women’s self help groups were granted loan by the bank. Mr.A.Balakrishnan Asst General Manager, Mr.Vijayakumar – District Coordinator, Mr.K.Ramasubbu – Senior Manager and the 24-Veerapandi panchayat president participated in this event.
Pujya Swamiji also handed over computers to Viveka Women Self Help Group for its newly started center. Shri.K.Kuppusamy Advisor, T.T.K.Hospital gave a talk on “Alcohol De-addiction”. The centre for Alcohol De-addiction will be inaugurated in March.
 
Teacher's training program
A seven day training program for teachers to run Sandhya Gurukulam program was conducted at the AIM for Seva Tribal Students Hostel, Anaikatti, Coimbatore in the presence of Pujya Swamiji. This training was imparted to 30 candidates who were selected after a survey conducted in various villages in and around Anaikatti. The orientation program for this was carried out in three batches. This camp was conducted by Mr.V.Jithendranath & Mrs.Vasanthi Jithendranath from Chennai.
A skill in hand to survive
Three day training on the production of Agarbathi or incense sticks was organized for the women of the selfhelp groups, in association with N.Ranga Rao & Sons, Mysore. The training was conducted by Mr.Ragavendran and Mrs.Vasanthamma. All the village women close to Anaikatti attended this training program.
 
Cataract camp in Andhra Pradesh
An eye camp was organized for the slum dwellers in Andhra Pradesh. Mr.Narasimhan Murthy, a scientist & philanthropist inaugurated this cataract camp. He has done a lot of research in the U.S. Now he is back to this native land and is involved in a number of community service projects. He is educating about 100 slum children in the city. The camp was well attended by the slum residents. All of them underwent a thorough eye check-up mainly for cataract and were given free eyeglasses.
 
Convocation
The 4th convocation of Swami Dayananda College of Arts & Science, Manjakudi, (affiliated to Bharathidasan University) was held on 26th Jan 2008. Degrees and diplomas were conferred to 240 students by Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati. Smt.Sheela Balaji - Secretary, welcomed the gathering and congratulated the students on their accomplishment. Dr.S.Ramamurthy - Director presented the academic achievements and other activities of the college focusing on the curricular, co-curricular, teaching, research, placements and cultural activities of the college. Shri.N.Ravi, Editor - The Hindu was the chief guest and he delivered the convocation address. He said “the students were fortunate to study in this college, which also taught Indian traditions and ethos founded by Pujya Swamiji. He cautioned students against three kinds of tensions between
- Tradition bound society and the modern society,
- Religious faith and the rational and scientific ideas and
- Demands of the family and obligations to the community outside.
He stressed the need for excellent tolerance, courage and confidence that will help these students face challenges in the outside world.

Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati awarded the degrees to the students. He advised all the students to be “contributors” rather than remain as mere “consumers”. He said that one should be conscious of his image, the images of his parents, the ancient tradition and culture, his country and his guru. Dr.N.Seshadri, Principal of the college administered the oath and finally Shri.G.Ramachandran, Correspondent gave the vote of thanks. On the whole this was a memorable event of the college.
Prior to this event, there was a 3 day workshop on “Value Based Education”. This workshop was inaugurated by Smt.K.Indra, the Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Tiruchirapalli. Prominent speakers were Shri.T.N.Ramachandran - Indologist and an exponent of Saiva Siddhantha, Dr.Prema Nandakumar - writer, author and literary critic, Dr.Mamata Das - Head of the Dept. of Education, Puducherry University, Shri.T.N.Ganapathy - Retd. Professor of Philosophy, Vivekananda College, Chennai, and Dr.Prema - Dean and Prof of Educational Technology. Dr.Ponnavaiko - Vice chancellor of Bharathidasan University gave the valedictory speech. He appreciated the management for organizing a workshop of this kind and promised to include Value education as part of the curriculum from next academic year onwards. Pujya Swamiji in his address, pointed out the subtle difference between “value-based education” and “values”. There were carnatic music recitals in the evenings by Padmabhushan Shri.T.N.Sehagopalan, Padmasri Smt.Sudha Raghunathan, and Ms.Nisha Rajagopal that were well attended by music lovers from Kubakonam, Kudavasal and Tiruvarur. |
