Education
To ensure that the rest of the population, especially those in remote backward areas of the country, gain access to education, AIM for Seva decided to bring children from rural areas closer to education.
Thus began the concept of Student Homes through which most of the problems that children faced could be solved. Children could now stay in one place and attend school regularly. Besides, being physically away from home, children are no longer forced into child labour by their family members. Thirdly, since the child’s education, food and stay are totally taken care of, parents put less pressure on children to take up jobs.
AIM for Seva plans to build student homes in each on of the 800+ districts, covering all of India by 2015.
'Evening Tuition Centers' have been started to assist children going to primary school in their studies and homework. AIM for Seva is also running Pre-schools, (Balwadis) for the children between the ages of 3 to 5 to inculcate the habit of going to school for them. In some cases, the government has requested AIM for Seva to take over schools in order to improve the quality of education. In such cases, the schools are being run in partnership with governments.
At present, AIM for Seva is running 50 Student Homes, 11 higher secondary schools and over 100 evening tuition centers and pre-schools. More than 18,000 students are enrolled in one of these education programs. |
