Celebrating the Spirit of the Earth

The Vedas teach us that the planet’s resources are not merely a source for our consumption and personal gratification. Like Mother Earth, we need to learn to share (vibhakthi), to give in abundance (vriddhi), provide nutrition (vrihi) and be compassionate (daya). This will bring harmony in society. Simple changes in our lifestyle can make a strong impact.

Keeping this mission of Pujya Swamiji, Chairperson and Managing Trustee of AIM for Seva, Smt. Sheela Balaji has built Chennai’s one-of-a-kind immersion centre called ‘Spirit of the Earth’. Located at the AIM for Seva premises in Alwarpet, Chennai, Organic Heritage Rice, handmade products using natural fibre made by tribal women of Anaikatti, Coimbatore, and handwoven cloth and paper creations by the residents of Krupa Home (a residential facility for the differently-abled), and books on good living written by Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati, are available.

Spirit Of The Earth shelves raw and par-boiled versions of seven varieties of rice grown in our 40-acre organic farm spread out in the rich alluvial soils of the Kaveri delta in Manjakkudi, Kumbakonam. They are organic, heritage, non-hybrid, pesticide-free in nature and rich in nutrients. There is Kaatuyaanam, Kalajeera, Karuppu Kauvuni, Kichili Champa, Iluppai Poo Champa, Mapillai Champa, and Thooyamalli. The region is steeped in history and legacy and is also the birthplace of AIM for Seva’s founder, Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati.

Krupa Home products include bags, folders, files, pouches, napkins and much more, while the tribal women have carefully handcrafted areca nut palm plates, spoons, yoga mats, purses and clutches. Pujya Swamiji’s talks and lectures reveal the most profound truth that is Vedanta, and the richness of our tradition. The wisdom he shares is essential for the fulfillment of all life. And so, all this put together, is Spirit of the Earth–which combines sustenance, compassion and wisdom.

We celebrated the opening of the centre with a small gathering. Rakesh Raghunathan, a specialist on heirloom recipes conducted a tasting ceremony comprising of traditional South Indian foods designed and cooked with the Organic Heritage Rice. An aesthetically appealing menu that was also a feast for the eyes was designed for our guests. We welcomed them with a refreshing Iluppai Poo Champa Nombu Kanji. Soft and smooth Pidi Kozhakattai made of Mapillai Champa, crispy and flavourful Adai made of Karuppu Kavuni and Kollu. And all these were accompanied with an equivalent main course – Thooyamalli Kothamalli rice and Kanika, a sweet rice delicacy from Orissa made with Kalajeera rice. To top it all was the palate-tickling sour Kaatuyaanam Arisi Puli Vadai.

Many distinguished guests and well-wishers of AIM for Seva came to grace the occasion. The store attracted members of the media who attended the event. Writers and journalists also got an opportunity for a face-to-face with our Chairperson and Managing Trustee, Smt. Sheela Balaji.

“Rice is our basic need for sustenance. India once had over 10,000 varieties of rice, today we barely know of 200 of them. Our people in the villages are extremely skilled and creative and deserve to get recognized. And for our residents at Krupa Home, weaving is a therapy and a pleasure for them. There is no greater wisdom than what Indian culture has to offer. So we thought of bringing it all together under one roof,” shares our Chairperson.
