Ronapal is a small village near Sawantwadi town in Sindudurg District. The village is surrounded by mountains and has a huge tribal population. In the first quarter of 2007, AIM for Seva surveyed 25 villages in Sawantwadi District, to identify prospective students for the upcoming student home in Ronapal. Numerous rural and tribal families were identified and the parents were called and interviewed at Madura.

Out of the final 100 applications received, AIM for Seva selected 52 children based on the criteria of: (i) Economic condition of the family (ii) Distance to any available school (iii) Regularity of children attending school due to the environment at home.

Many of these children come from families belonging to the Dhangar Samaj which is a nomadic pastoral community living in around 20 villages around Sawantwadi. The children belong to families either with single parents, no parents or parents where the fathers are alcoholic and have no consistent income. The parents either work as labourers in mines or as farmers. Most of the families are below the poverty line.

At the Student Home, the children are studying in the 5th, 6th and 7th standard in school. In the first year of its operation, almost all the students have passed in their exams with flying colors. Three children have secured 74% in their 7th standard exams one girl has secured 73% in the 9th standard and many others have passed with I Class.

The children also take part in various extra curricular activities such as sports, elocution and theatre. The Student Home plans to start training the students in computer science, and is looking for donors who can fund the infrastructure for the same. From June of 2009 the children will also be given special coaching in all subjects by college staff from the nearby institutions and also from a retired school headmaster, who has come forward to help these children. Plans are also in the offing to start music classes soon.

The children follow a disciplined daily routine of morning yoga, prayers, wash, breakfast and going to school. After school hours, they are given an hour of play time followed by prayers and study time. The children also carry out all the daily routine maintenance work like cleaning the premises, making their beds, washing the utensils and even helping in the kitchen with enthusiasm. The parents, who visit the Chatralaya every month, are more than satisfied with the improvement shown, not only in academics but also in their health.

The student home has seen a marked difference in the health of the children as most of them were under nourished when they joined the Chatralaya and are now healthy and fit under the loving care of the caretakers. Dr. Khanolkar, a child specialist who has his own nursing home in Sawantwadi town has been regularly visiting the student home and treating the children completely free of cost. His son and daughter in law - Dr. Arvind and Dr. Ashwini Khanolkar also conduct regular health check ups for the children.

Mr. Padharpod, a generous builder from Mumbai, recently donated Rs. 15,000 for an inverter for the Student Home. Other local supporters include Mr. Pushkaraj Kole who donated school stationeries along with bedding essentials for the children. Mr.Kamath and several other generous donors have also donated towards various needs of the student home like a water purifier and other kitchen essentials.

The student home has one head cook, two assistants, two servants, a watchman and a full time accountant, who assist in the running of the student home.

The entire Student Home is run under the administration of Swamini Swatmanishtananda, under whose influence the children are encouraged and guided to a great extent.

The garden city of Bangalore extended a very warm, gracious & respectful welcome to Swami Dayananda Saraswati on the 20th of December 2009.

Banners and festoons informing one and all of Swamiji’s talks in Bangalore were seen at all strategic places in the city.

Swamiji delivered a series of lectures in “Finding One’s Identity”. His lectures unfolded the vision of Vedic scriptures - that all that is here is the manifestation of Ishwara, the Lord. Finding one’s identity is to understand one’s culture and the vedic vision.

The cold weather did not prove a deterrent to the many, who eagerly participated in the morning meditation session. The guided mediation session helped one to discover many roles that they play in their life, and to be able to understand that they were not the roles.

The first 6 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita, translated by Swamini Sadavi Varada Chaitanya in Kannada, was released by Swamiji on the 20th of December 2009.

A special counter displayed books written by Swami Dayananda Saraswati. It was well received - infact another stock had to be brought from Chennai !!

Swamiji,s meeting with YPO on 19th of December. It was an eye opener to the younger generation - a meeting with a true friend, philosopher and guide

The need of the hour is for every young boy and girl to be a useful member of society; to extend a caring hand to those in need. SEVA - should be a way of life

AIM for Seva is an all India movement which aims to transform and unite the society with seva-meaning service. AIM for seva is a bridge connecting the mainstream of the society with the people living in remote areas.

Karnataka Doordarshan coverage on Aim for Seva in December 2009
