Khilanani AIM for Seva Eye care Hospital was inaugurated by Pujya Swamiji.

The gift of sight may be a given for most. But there are many in India, due to poverty and sub standard hygiene cannot always count on that right to see. Mathura, near Brindavan is home to many underprivileged in the society. So when AIM for Seva opened the new eye-care centre, it was no surprise that within six weeks the centre had performed over one hundred operations. The twenty bed hospital and its two theatres are proving to be a much needed facility in the district.

With a resident eye surgeon and a general physician cum administrator the hospital situated in Aurangabad, on the Mathura –Agra Road, is equipped to perform cataract lens replacement surgery and eye operations both corrective and emergency. A second theatre carries out minor operations and outpatient work.

Two fulltime assistants and a refractionist assist the surgeon. A field coordinator travels regularly with the doctor to remote villages where patients are examined, and if necessary referred to the hospital for treatment and or admission.

AIM for Seva initially began the eye hospital at Mathura in leased accommodation in conjunction with the Municipal Corporation of Brindavan. But when suitable land became available the new building was constructed and was inaugurated by Pujya Swamiji . Chief Guests for this function were the hospital sponsor, Dr.Prem Khilanani and Mrs.Pratima Khilanani who traveled from USA for the opening ceremony.

On the 15th & 16th of Jan 2008, a “health mela” was organized in association with IFFCO in Kosi-Kalan, about 50kms from our eye-care hospital in Mathura. 250 patients were identified for surgery. The AIM for Seva hospital van goes everyday to bring patients who are scheduled for the operation for that particular day. After post operative observation they are again dropped off in their respective villages. With this camp, we have performed close to 70 operations and expected to be more by February. The patients are given free medicines & food. Their attendants are also given free food & accommodation.

Joyful celebrations at Jeypore

To many, it is as important as a birthday or an anniversary. It is in fact an anniversary that heralds the setting up of a chatralaya in Jeypore, Orissa. The Jeypore Chatralaya at Panjiaguda celebrated its annual day recently, which coincided with two other major festivals - Hanuman Jayanti and Mahashub Sankranti.

The large turnout for the celebrations added to the festivities. Shri Muna Nath, the Chairman of the Municipality was the Chief Guest for the evening. His speech highlighted the objectives and achievements of AIM for Seva.

A colourful venue, multi-talented students who performed various cultural activities and their various endeavours that were widely appreciated by the audience - in all, the event was a resounding success.

Bringing together farmers

The farmers of Kottur were in need of a forum where they could share their knowledge and experience so that they could benefit from one another. AIM for Seva made this possible by organizing a farmers' meet at Kottur village. Over 50 farmers from the nearby villages attended the meet.

The main speaker at the forum was Mr. Arachalur R Selvam, Organizer, Organic Farming Association, Erode District. Being a successful organic farmer and trainer both at the national and international level, he spoke on the importance and need of natural farming and zero budget agriculture. Other key topics covered were soil rejuvenation, the dangers of chemical fertilizers, preparation of vermi compose, and the importance and role of micro-organisms.

The meet ended with Mr. Mativannan of Kottur thanking AIM for Seva for its role in offering a forum for the farmers.

Milestones of Success - Pune

It was a journey dotted with the fruits of AIM for Seva's efforts. On the 18th of January, 2007, we toured places where education has been vastly improved through schools run in Pune. The first stop was Nikamwadi, a village around 65 kms from Pune, where a school with pre-primary (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th standards) was set up. This school has 18 students in the pre-primary level and 17 in the primary classes. The land for the school was donated by the villagers and AIM for Seva supporters from Pune funded the construction of the building.

The next stop was the village of Dattawadi, where the school set up by AIM for Seva has two teachers who impart education to 18 students at the pre-primary level and 14 students in primary classes. The group visited Mahagaon, a village 5 kms from Dattawadi. Free camps are being conducted here on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of every month by a team of doctors from Pune. They offer free services to approximately 120-150 patients from around 15 neighbouring villages. The medicines are procured from the donations collected by AIM for Seva. In cases where the patient requires specialized treatment, he/she is referred to hospitals in Pune. The final stop was at Dattawadi Shivane, 55 kms from Pune. This village has a colourful, single-room school that is a learning ground for 18 pre-primary and 26 primary class students, who are taught by two teachers.

Such initiatives by AIM for Seva have not only helped children gain access to primary education, but has also inspired other villages to start similar schools. Some of them have also offered to donate land where AIM for Seva can start schools. Besides schools and clinics, AIM for Seva has also been conducting dental camps and eye camps on a regular basis. Five Self Help Groups have been formed, each comprising 18 members who operate bank accounts and pool in their savings to lend money to one another.
