The Swami Dayananda Rotary Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kadalur (Kanchipuram), Tamil Nadu recently received an award for securing 100 % result in class 10th board examinations (2018). The 5th Annual Award Ceremony was organised by the Kanchipuram District Self Financing Schools’ Association at Montfort Matriculation Higher Secondary School, St. Thomas Mount, Chennai.
You would be pleased to know that our school has now been upgraded. The Swami Dayananda Rotary Matriculation Higher Secondary School now offers classes from KG to 12. The beginnings were humble. The school was an outcome of a post tsunami project undertaken by AIM for Seva. As part of a larger rehabilitation effort in the region, a need for an English medium school was felt and the Swami Dayananda Rotary Matriculation Higher Secondary School took wings in 2005.
Today, the institution provides education to over 700 students and some of them are sports champions in zonal level tournaments.
The Swami Dayananda Rotary Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kadalur has an annual tradition of holding a KG (Kindergarten food festival). This year, 144 students and their parents (124) participated in this school fair. A variety of lip smacking items were displayed at the fair that included hibiscus juice, lemon juice, mud pot water, carrot idly, ragi and rava laddu, wheat halwa and sprouted grains among other items. “Many people have forgotten about organic and healthy foods. Our children have been introduced to fast food. So we have started to conduct this organic food festival to create awareness about the benefits among parents, “said school authorities.
This is in sync with AIM for Seva’s values to live in harmony with the environment by adopting sustainable lifestyle practices. To this end, we are pushing the frontiers when it comes to organic; whether it is organising a national organic fair in Chennai or participating in one in New Delhi.
In July 2018, the school was privileged to host the zonal sports meet. Competitions were held in volley ball (boys), Kabbadi (boys and girls) and hand ball (boys and girls). The meet saw participation of 1,150 students from 30 schools.
Recently, Oriental Insurance came forward and sponsored 30 desks for our students in the school. AIM for Seva’s culture preview shows (Nandalala and Jagat Pavani Ganga) held in the city in August 2018 were a fund raiser for the Swami Dayananda Rotary Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Kadalur. Republic Day was also celebrated in the school grounds.
We are in the process of expanding sanitation facilities at the school. To this end, funds are being raised to construct a new toilet block. We are looking to complete the construction by next academic year (June 2019).
Many surveys in the past have indicated that one of the most important reasons for high dropout rates and non-enrolment of girls in rural India is lack of adequate sanitation facilities.
As the institution has been upgraded to higher secondary status recently, we are planning to construct a new building that will accommodate class XI and XII students. The building will have three floors, with each storey having 6 classrooms each.
