A new kind of merger

Think accounting and what come to mind are book keeping, M&A deals and tax compliance. So it was a refreshing day for 20 employees from Deloitte, Hitech City, Hyderabad when they chose to spend a day with our children at the AIM for Seva Tribal Boys Chatralayam in Alwal (Ranga Reddy), Telangana. There are currently 80 boys residing in the Alwal hostel.

The Deloitte employees came in as volunteers and engaged with our kids in fun-filled ways. They conducted painting and essay competitions and other games. They even ended up painting three dormitories of our children. The initiative was undertaken by Deloitte as part of its Impact (Corporate Social Responsibility) Day. They chose it to celebrate it in a special way by coming down to our hostel and spending time with the kids.

Monica Yekule, senior consultant at Deloitte who lead the volunteer initiative said this was part of the Impact Day that is celebrated by Deloitte every year on November 25. “The idea is to give back to the community and this is a cross sector collaboration effort,” she said.

In the morning, the team at Deloitte engaged in a warm-up and ‘getting to know each other’ exercise with our boys at the Alwal Chatralayam. As part of this bonding initiative, there were songs, dance and quiz competitions.

In the afternoon, sub-groups were formed and 3 rooms in the hostel were painted and decorated. “The hidden talent in all of us gushed out, volunteers and students alike. It was truly a romantic feeling,” said Yekule.

Yekule said the key take away from the whole effort was that the 20 member team from Deloitte came to know more about AIM for Seva and its work. By the same token, our 80 students at the AIM for Seva Tribal Boys Chatralayam at Alwal, Telangana were also inspired and impressed with the Deloitte team.

Deloitte is one of the Big 4 accounting firms in the world, the others being Ernst & Young (EY), KPMG and Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC). As part of its CSR (corporate social responsibility) initiatives, Deloitte India observes Impact Day wherein thousands of volunteers from the company team up across different cities and spend the entire working day with communities. As per the company’s website, the Impact Day provides an opportunity for volunteers to put their passion, determination and skills to use for the benefit of the communities. The Impact Day has been conceptualised by the company to advocate societal change and nurture leadership potential among the rank and file of the organisation that goes beyond accounting, IT, human resources and management consultancy expertise.
